Dion and the Bellsmyres.

Fili's favourite record of the year was Justin Beiber "My World 2". She's also been listening to Dion and the Belmonts and Chuck Berry intensively.

James has been listening to Bishop Allen, Crystal Castles and the Unthanks. Old stuff was mostly 70's soul like Detroit Spinners and Syreeta.

Shakin' Stevens Merry Christmas Everyone

Fili once texted me out of the blue and said "what's that sleigh driver all about in the Shakin Stevens official Merry Christmas Everyone video?" It was something that had been troubling me for years as well.

There's a couple of things about the video that are worth noting. Firstly, about 1 minute in, Shaking Stevens shakes the snowman's hand very enthusiastically.  I guess the snowman mustve said "I'll send you those  rare Elvis '55 demo tapes when I get back home after I melt in the thaw". Secondly Shaking Stevie reaches over and nearly puts his arm round the female sleigh driver but at the last minute decides against it. Still, the two of them drive off into the dark while Santa and all the kids wave them on. Where they are going in temperatures of -10c nobody knows, except the shakester.

There's a few other tv appearances from Shaking Stevens around this time singing this song. Mostly he's wearing a jumper from the bottom of the donation pile in Oxfam and doing a very energetic dance in a pair of Farrahs. He looks utterly bored but he's a compelling performer because you spend all your time thinking how close or far from Elvis he really is.

Wham Last Christmas video versus Hussy's Snowboard

It's hard to watch this video and not think about George's recent prison term for smoking a lot of hash. Actually if you think about it prison's probably the ideal place for George. There's loads of puff and loads of poofs.

His hair looks like Lady Diana around this time and I suppose from a distance you could say Andrew looks a bit like Prince Charles, if he had a super mullet and smiled a lot.

Anyway the striking thing for me is the guy who goes out in the snow wearing a beige raincoat and comes back with some logs. Instead of putting them in the fire he hands them to George. it's like he's saying "what the fuck are these logs for?". George takes them off him as if to say "I dont have a clue but since the cameras are on I'll take them back from you. By the way I like your raincoat".

Anyway I've been to Saas Fe where the video was filmed. The cable car they go up on is at the top of the mountain but oddly enough they end up in a tree lined valley at the bottom of the mountain. In the 80's you could do anything whether it contradicted science or common sense or both.

Love the song though and yes we stole the melody for Snowboard.
